Writing for Recovery

Many of the poems collected in Three Syllables Describing Addiction and In the Months of My Son’s Recovery emanate from the current opioid epidemic. I am particularly interested in poetry that comes out of the experiences of those who have been affected by others’ alcoholism and addiction. That interest has led me to conduct workshops on Writing for Recovery, and to offer presentations in various settings on the topic. If you are interested in having me present to your group, organization, or facility, please contact me at kate.daniels@vanderbilt.edu

The Porch: WRITING FOR RECOVERY
Addiction claims many victims — not only those who suffer from it, but also their loved ones. Many studies have shown that writing can be effective for people in expressing and processing some of the complex, painful, and often stigmatized emotions that characterize the addiction experience. This workshop is designed to support people whose lives have been affected by a friend or family member’s substance abuse. Our focus will be on narrating our own story (in prose or poetry) through a series of brief exercises and prompts, and sharing with others. Participants will be asked to commit to confidentiality. Knowledge of 12-Step recovery or mindfulness techniques may be helpful, but is not at all necessary.
• Instructor: Kate Daniels
• Length of workshop: 4 weeks
• Date: Saturdays, September 1-22, 2018
• Time: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
• Location: The Porch

The Porch: WRITING FOR RECOVERY
Addiction claims many victims — not only those who suffer from it, but also their loved ones. This workshop is designed to support people whose lives have been affected by a friend or family member’s substance abuse. Using examples from contemporary writers as prompts, we’ll undertake brief exercises in writing poetry and short prose, designed to calm our thoughts and untangle painful emotions. Together, we will explore the healing aspects of writing out of and about the complex nexus of feelings that addiction arouses. Participants will be asked to commit to confidentiality. Knowledge of 12-Step recovery or mindfulness techniques may be helpful, but is not at all necessary.
